Wow. I didn't think anything...

Wow. I didn't think anything could move that fast. Last night I got bored, was avoiding work, and decided to see what hardware I could acquire to rescue my digital camera, which has been unable to take pictures since I apparently screwed up something minor on the compact flash card. I did a quick Altavista search for vendors and ended up at a number of non-impressive places before encountering Cyberian Outpost. Not only were their prices decent, but they offered free overnight shipping on items in stock. I ordered an 8 meg (like the one I had) Kingston compact flash card and a pc card adaptor so I could plug it into Yukon. I submitted my order at 20:41 last night.

Between mechanics and physics this morning, I checked my e-mail and learned via Neelix that there was a package in the mailroom. I hurried to the mailroom and picked it up, less than twelve hours after I ordered. I am extremely impressed. This is officially a shameless plug for Cyberian Outpost. I was expecting to get it hopefully by Thursday evening. I am amazed.

I sucessfully managed to format the offending card as ext2 (I tried msdos but couldn't convince mtools to work), at which point my camera realized it wasn't formated and did it. Now I have two fully-functioning 8 meg compact flash cards, perfect for taking lots of pictures at StarFest this weekend (getting this hardware is tempting me to go, now that I actually can take pictures). I'll probably bring the geekcam up RSN, but now I'm running to lunch, hopefully before the rush.

Ok, well, the most obvious problem with [new years resolution
about getting a girlfriend] is that the intended outcome relies on
variables which are out of my control. It's a matter of chance,
luck, being in the right place at the wrong time, what have you.
Obviously, it also relies on the willful participation of
another human being. Since the only people we control are
ourselves, making resolutions -- promises to ourselves -- which
require the involvement of others, who may or may not want any
part of the game, is like sitting at home and cheering a
football team, and then saying "We won! We won!" when in fact
you had absolutely nothing to do with any of it. Or something
like that.
