The Year we Make Contact

At the end of Week Three (which was two weeks ago, since this is now Week Five), I wandered to Walmart to acquire some important, useful stuff, and suddenly 2010: The Year we Make Contact jumped off the shelf into my hands. Since it was US$10 for the DVD, I acquired it, and (of course) had to watch it. (It ended up on my shelf next to 2001: A Space Odyssey.) I enjoyed watching it, even though (or perhaps especially because) it was nothing at all like 2001. It was quite good sci-fi (the hardest sci-fi I've seen; I watched The Fifth Element the same night, which was also amusing, but didn't resemble hard sci-fi in the slightest), although I couldn't help but notice what worked and what didn't. The visual effects (miniatures, I assume) stood up to the test of time (it was made in 1984), but some of the monitors looked especially nasty, since they were trying to use cutting-edge technology that unfortunately was obsolete within two years of the movie's production. Still, I enjoyed it.
I was going to say more, but this is plenty for now. Enjoy!
