Rage is Dead / Long Live Rage

Under ideal circumstances, Ziyal would have always been providing an alternate method for getting my ever-exciting content. After installing Debian on Ziyal's new 60 gig drive in September, I lacked inspiration to bring the current version of my webpage up on Ziyal, since I had decided a while before that it needed a major overhaul -- it was still hideous spaghetti code from a year and a half ago. Now the code is even older and cruftier, but it's getting better. Last night at Gamefest, I started to play with the code, preparing it to serve the official version of my website from Ziyal. It's doing ok, for now, but it still needs work.

Scott keeps claiming that he's distressed about the current status of Rage, but he still hasn't gotten around to doing anything about it. It finally dawned on me that I should probably convince Rage to do this whole dhcp thing, and even threw together a neat little script to e-mail me Rage's ip, but this managed to break through some mysterious way that I haven't been able to hunt down. I'm fairly inclined to think that, even if I were informed of Rage's ever-changing ip, a server without a static ip isn't worth much anyway.

Rage is dead.

A few options exist. While I'm reticent to ask for money from loyal Content Solutions members -- especially since I have none of my own to add -- since these loyal members have suggested that they might be willing to make a financial contribution, I shall mention it here. There are two expenses associated with Rage's future real co-location: a 1U case (and new inner components, in the likely event that Rage won't actually fit as-is inside a tiny 1U case) and the co-location itself. I don't have real numbers for either of those items, but I can assure you that they won't be cheap.

Long live Rage.

The other real option is to give up on Rage. Between Argo, Chiana, and Ziyal, it shouldn't be hard to find adequate hosting. I can run the central festing.org mail exchanger on the friendly Buildmeasite Cobalt and forward your mail to wherever you wanted. Content Solutions chatter and headlines would be a little harder; I'm working on an intelligent scheme (XML via HTTP, probably, unless anyone else has any really brilliant ideas that don't involve reinventing too much of the wheel) to facilitate the sharing of these important data.

I've pointed jaeger.festing.org to Ziyal and bitscape.festing.org to Argo. Your dns may propagate accordingly.

Rage is dead. Long live festing.org.
I don't think war is warranted on this issue, but perhaps
on several others. :)
