The Place on the License Plate

Date: 2002-09-19 21:50:06

At supper tonight, Dad announced that he had officially informed his superiors at $ENERGY_INFORMATION_COMPANY[0] that he would be leaving to head to $ENERGY_INFORMATION_COMPANY[1]. [0] is conveniently located in Boulder, but [1] is located in Norman, Oklahoma. aka "the place on the license plate", which we called it on vacation in July when we didn't actually want to mention the place by name but thought it wise to discuss it.

The number one reason why Dad took this job (at least, as I understand it) is because it's a major promotion -- he'll be Chief Operating Officer. After the acquisition of $ENERGY_INFORMATION_COMPANY[0] by $MAJOR_PUBLISHING_COMPANY last year, Dad has become increasingly annoyed by working for a mega-corporation who barely knows who he is or what his division does or why it's actually still a unit of the company. (It doesn't help that $MAJOR_PUBLISHING_COMPANY happens to have a vice president of information technology who should be taken outside and shot. Those who attended a certain recent gathering know what I'm talking about. It has something to do with neglecting to back up servers.)

On the other hand, Oklahoma is not exactly the place I want to live. Willy polled his friends last year and came up with the number one reason not to move to Oklahoma: the musical. The plan is for Dad to live in Oklahoma during the week and generally come home to Boulder on the weekends for the next two years until Willy graduates from high school. (Fairview is a great school, but it'd be hard for Willy to attend if he lived in Oklahoma.) Then Mom moves to Oklahoma with Dad. (I suppose my siblings will likely move their stuff down there too. Sucks to be them. (I kind of hope I'll be moved out of the basement by them. Sucks to be me.))

As indicated by other nearby content, I headed up to Fort Collins today in Tobias to throw my resume at hundreds of unsuspecting people. I ended up giving away five copies, three to people who definitely not hiring until spring. I was kind of hoping that showing up in person (especially wearing a tie -- I didn't see very many people at all wearing one) would make some sort of impression to differentiate me from the rest of the crowd. Oh, well.
