Having carefully considered the merits of a high-definition optical player, I now intend to buy one when the price for a well-reviewed, latest-profile, upgradable Blu-Ray player hits $150. I can get Blu-Ray disks from Netflix for an extra $1/month, and my favorite library is getting the disks as well. I'm not sure how soon I plan on buying HD disks but I don't plan on buying any more DVDs either.
