Seafarers of Cities and Knights of Catan

The rule book for Cities and Knights has suggestions on how to play it with Seafarers. Why do I have a bad feeling we'll end up playing Seafarers of Cities and Knights of Greater Catan exactly once?
Cities and Knights changes the dynamic in several interesting ways: Barbarian hoards will attack Catan and it's up to the players to build an army to defend it. If the army the players field isn't strong enough to withstand the barbarian invasion, the barbarians will sack cities, reducing them to settlements. Players can also upgrade their cities with the help of commodities -- more refined versions of the resources we're used to from Catan. (Cities now produce one resource and one commodity, which makes it harder to get vast quantities of a specific resource.)
I think I have some quasi-strategies forming, but it'll be interesting to see what we come up with next week.
