Calvin's birthday

Calvin celebrated his eighth birthday last Sunday.
After attending my grandmother's graveside service, we drove back to San Francisco and stopped at Whole Foods for cake, since Kiesa didn't have time to bake one. (This store is one of the landmarks I can use to orient other San Francisco residents to my house. "I live in Ingleside," I say, "near the Whole Foods on Ocean Ave.")
Calvin had the week off for spring break, and Julian's daycare followed the same school schedule. We depend on school and daycare to give Sasa, our au pair, time off during the day; so we decided we should take time off as well. Kiesa took three days off work, Monday through Wednesday, and we invited Yanthor and Anya to join us.
We enjoyed a quiet celebration at home, including presents sent to Calvin from various relatives.
After Julian went to bed, we played Cities and Knights of Catan at Calvin's request. He still has some work to do to figure out a good strategy, and to avoid antagonizing those around him, but he clearly enjoys the game (and possibly the opportunity to interact with his parents and other adults as a peer).
