Why did Doyle leave at the end of episode nine?
Because Joss Whedon thought it would be cool to do something that had never been done in a tv show before: Surprise everybody, and kill off a major character after just a few episodes. The fans hated him for it, but he maintained that if he shook things up early on, it would add more suspense later when the main characters were put in peril. In the world of Joss Whedon, anything can happen, even if it's against typical tv show rules.
